Honda have confirmed the official launch date of their new power unit, marking the brand’s full return to Formula 1 as Aston Martin’s exclusive engine supplier from 2026 onwards. The unveiling will take place on January 20, 2026 in Tokyo, signaling far more than a standard technical presentation.

The announcement draws a definitive line under Honda’s partnership with Red Bull, a collaboration that peaked with Max Verstappen’s World Championship title in 2021, before Honda gradually stepped back as Red Bull established its own in-house power unit program.

The Honda–Aston Martin alliance, announced in 2023, was deliberately aligned with the major regulatory overhaul coming in 2026, one of the most transformative shifts in modern Formula 1. Under the new rules, power units will feature a 50% internal combustion and 50% electric power split (next-generation hybrid architecture), redefining efficiency, deployment, and race management.

The Tokyo launch event will feature Toshihiro Mibe, President and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman of Aston Martin, and Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, highlighting the project’s significance at the highest level of the sport.

In an official statement, Honda emphasized the importance of the moment:
“This is the Japanese marque’s first power unit under the dramatically reformed regulations. We will share the aspirations of Honda and the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team as we take on the challenge of competing at the pinnacle of motorsport.”

In recent seasons, Aston Martin have relied on Mercedes power units, gearboxes, and rear suspension, but the team have consistently outlined their ambition to become a fully independent title contender. A seventh-place finish in the current Constructors’ Championship underlines why 2026 is viewed internally as a reset point.

That reset will also be structural. Adrian Newey, one of the most influential designers in Formula 1 history, will step into the role of Team Principal from 2026, while Andy Cowell transitions into Chief Strategy Officer, tasked with optimizing the technical partnership with Honda.

For Honda, 2026 is more than a return. It is a statement of intent. Since first entering Formula 1 in 1964, the brand has established itself as one of the most successful power unit manufacturers in the sport’s history. The Aston Martin project represents Honda’s most ambitious commitment of the modern hybrid era.

On January 20 in Tokyo, Honda will not just unveil a power unit. They will unveil their vision for Formula 1’s future.
