For more than two decades, Helmut Marko has been the driving force behind Red Bull’s racing empire — a relentless talent-spotter, risk-taker and strategist who reshaped the sport from the grassroots to the World Championship stage.
Now, after overseeing six Constructors’ titles and eight Drivers’ crowns, the Austrian advisor steps away, leaving behind a seismic legacy. His exit comes only six months after Christian Horner’s departure, completing a deep structural shift within the team.
The announcement feels less like a corporate change and more like the end of a dynasty.
Red Bull confirmed that Helmut Marko will officially leave his role at the end of the season, closing a chapter that began more than 20 years ago and propelled 20 drivers into Formula 1. Among them are the icons of modern F1: Sebastian Vettel, a four-time World Champion, and Max Verstappen, the generational talent who redefined the sport’s competitive landscape.
Team Principal Laurent Mekies reacted with heartfelt words:
“It is very sad news that Helmut is leaving us… His departure will leave a void, and we will truly miss him.”
Marko acknowledged that narrowly missing the 2025 title hit him deeply and helped define the timing of his exit:
“Narrowly missing out on the World Championship this season moved me deeply… now is the right moment for me to close this long and successful chapter.”
Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff underlined the magnitude of Marko’s impact:
“His instinct for exceptional talent shaped our entire junior program and left a lasting impact on Formula 1… Helmut will be deeply missed.”
His influence is everywhere: seven drivers on today’s grid emerged from the system he built — Verstappen, Sainz, Albon, Tsunoda, Lawson, Gasly and Hadjar.
Marko’s approach was famously direct. He sat down with young drivers face-to-face, made bold decisions in minutes and rarely missed. As F1 correspondent Lawrence Barretto noted, he was the one constantly searching for the next big thing, long before anyone else saw it coming.
With Marko gone, Red Bull steps into a period of reinvention. The question now is not what he achieved — but who could ever fill the space he leaves behind.
Helmut Marko exits Formula 1 as one of the most influential architects of the modern era: a man who turned raw instincts into champions, who believed in talent before the world noticed, and who defined Red Bull’s identity from day one. His legacy lives not only in trophies, but in the generations of drivers who carry his imprint.
A new chapter begins — for Red Bull, and for Formula 1.
