George Russell finished day one of Formula 1’s final 2026 pre-season test in Bahrain on top of the timesheets, in a session that blended qualifying simulations, long-run analysis, and key procedural evaluations from the FIA ahead of the season opener.

The Mercedes driver posted a 1m33.459s, edging Oscar Piastri by just 0.010s with a little over 30 minutes remaining. The lap came on his second push attempt on the C3 tyre, after a minor brake lock-up at Turn 10 had compromised his first run.

Prior to that, Russell delivered a strong nine-lap stint on the C2 compound, averaging 1m36.527s, and completed a session-high 76 laps, underlining both reliability and energy management consistency.

Morning benchmark times from Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, and Kimi Antonelli ultimately secured third, fourth, and fifth overall. The top seven — all representing F1’s leading quartet of teams — were covered by 0.840s, with Isack Hadjar and Lewis Hamilton rounding out the group.

Hadjar recovered from a limited 13-lap morning by adding 53 more in the afternoon. A late qualifying simulation on the softer C4 tyre failed to produce further improvement. Hamilton’s program was disrupted by two extended garage stops, restricting him to 44 laps.

The top 10 was completed by Carlos Sainz Jr., Franco Colapinto, and Gabriel Bortoleto, in a day defined more by structured data gathering than dramatic incidents.

The only car-induced red flag followed a spin from Lance Stroll, whose Aston Martin appeared to lose drive while downshifting into Turn 11. Despite completing 26 laps, Aston Martin recorded the lowest combined mileage alongside Fernando Alonso.

The final 10 minutes were reserved for procedural checks, including an FIA trial of a revised grid start procedure, in which every team except Aston Martin participated.
