Three decades after securing the World Championship with the team, Damon Hill is returning to Williams as an Official Ambassador, a move that goes beyond nostalgia and strengthens the historical identity of the Grove outfit at a pivotal stage of its competitive rebuild.

The 1996 champion, a central figure in one of the most successful eras in the team’s history, rejoins the organization in an institutional role, closing a circle that began in the early 1990s.

Hill first joined Williams in 1991 as a test and reserve driver before stepping up to a race seat in 1993. That season delivered his maiden Grand Prix victory in Hungary, marking the beginning of a period that would establish him among the leading figures on the grid.

The 1994 campaign saw him narrowly miss out on the title following a controversial collision with Michael Schumacher in Adelaide, although Williams secured the Constructors’ Championship for a third consecutive year. Two years later, in 1996, Hill completed the mission by becoming World Champion with eight wins that season, following in the footsteps of his father, two-time champion Graham Hill.

Across his Williams tenure, Hill amassed 21 victories, 40 podiums and 20 pole positions, cementing his status as one of the defining names of the team’s modern era.

He now returns as Official Ambassador, joining a representation line-up that also features his 1996 team mate Jacques Villeneuve and three-time W Series champion Jamie Chadwick.

“Williams is truly a special place for me and where some of the defining moments of my career took place,” Hill said. “I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of this sport and to have achieved what I did, and returning as an Ambassador is a real privilege. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the team’s history and help to support its legacy and future.”

Team Principal James Vowles underlined the symbolic weight of the return: “It’s an honour to welcome Damon back to Atlassian Williams F1 Team as an Ambassador. Few individuals represent this team quite like him.” He added: “Damon played a defining role in one of the most successful eras in our history, becoming a World Champion with Williams and leaving a legacy that continues to inspire the team today.”

Vowles also highlighted the continued presence of Chadwick and Villeneuve, describing a group that reflects Williams’ history, its commitment to developing talent and its ambition to compete at the very highest level again.

At a time when Williams is working to re-establish itself competitively, Hill’s return is more than ceremonial,  it is a statement of identity anchored in one of the surnames that defined its golden era.
