A dominant front-row lockout for Mercedes opens the 2026 season, while Red Bull’s title defense begins in disaster.
George Russell claimed pole position for the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, converting Mercedes’ weekend-long pace advantage into a commanding performance across all three qualifying segments. Kimi Antonelli, who had crashed heavily in FP3 earlier in the day, bounced back to qualify second, three tenths behind his teammate. The result gives Mercedes an all-silver front row to open the new regulation era.
The story of the afternoon, however, belonged as much to those who fell as to those who flew. Max Verstappen was eliminated in Q1 after spinning at Turn 1 on his first push lap and hitting the barrier, the rear axle locking and snapping the car sideways before he could react. The four-time champion walked away, his afternoon over, his race day set to begin from the back of the grid. Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll never emerged from their garages , compounding a dismal opening weekend for Aston Martin, whose car has been plagued by severe vibrations throughout.
Against that backdrop, Isack Hadjar delivered one of the session’s most significant moments. The Frenchman became the first Red Bull driver to reach Q3 on his debut with the team since Verstappen himself at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix , ultimately taking third on the grid in a result that signals Red Bull’s junior program remains elite even as the senior car struggles.
Also notable was 18-year-old rookie Arvid Lindblad, who reached Q3 on his Formula 1 debut.
Russell’s final pole lap of 1:18.934 in Q2 had already underlined the margin. In Q3, the gap to the rest only widened. Lando Norris, Piastri, Leclerc and Hamilton completed the top ten, but none could seriously threaten the Mercedes pace. The new 2026 regulations, with their lighter chassis and greater electrical power deployment, have, for one Saturday afternoon at least, handed Mercedes the clearest advantage in the paddock.
