F1 Brazil: Verstappen penalized as Red Bull pushed to the limit in Interlagos

Max Verstappen endured one of the toughest weekends of the season. What started with a surprise elimination in Q1 ended with the FIA confirming that the Dutchman will start the São Paulo Grand Prix from the pit lane for exceeding the allowed component limit on his power unit.

The technical report revealed that the RB21 incorporated new parts violating Article 28.2 of the sporting regulations, including the combustion engine, turbo, MGU-H, MGU-K, energy storage, and control electronics. All modifications were made under Parc Fermé conditions and without approval from the technical delegate, automatically triggering the penalty. Unauthorized suspension changes were also made, sealing the inevitable punishment.

The penalty comes at a critical moment for Red Bull, which has shifted from dominant authority to evident reliability struggles. In the Interlagos paddock, the atmosphere suggested the team is pushing its mechanical limits beyond safe margins, trying to keep a championship slipping away firmly within reach.

Verstappen faces a steep climb on one of the most unpredictable tracks on the calendar. Interlagos punishes mistakes, and starting from the pit lane on a short, variable-weather circuit leaves little room for heroic comebacks. With Lando Norris starting from pole and leading the championship by nine points, the scenario looks extremely challenging for the three-time world champion.

Inside the team, alarms are ringing louder than ever. While the RB21 has shown bursts of speed, successive engine modifications reveal unusual fragility. Sources cited by Motorsport.com said, “Durability is at its limit, and every adjustment is a gamble.” What was once a symbol of technical perfection now appears as a struggle to maintain a crumbling dominance.

With just four Grands Prix remaining, Red Bull is in uncharted territory: no longer just battling McLaren, but also their own mechanical wear. Verstappen’s penalty not only reshuffles the grid but signals a potential turning point in the season. If Brazil was the thermometer, Red Bull is beginning to feel the heat.

Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes are watching closely. The era of absolute dominance may have reached its limit in Interlagos.
