Verstappen penalized: Total chaos for Red Bull in Brazil

Max Verstappen’s weekend in Interlagos went from difficult to outright chaotic. After a shocking Q1 (first qualifying segment) elimination at the Brazilian Grand Prix, the FIA confirmed that the three-time World Champion will start from the pit lane after Red Bull breached multiple power unit component regulations.

According to the FIA technical delegate’s report, Verstappen’s RB21 received a new set of power unit elements —including the ICE (internal combustion engine), TC (turbocharger), MGU-H (heat motor-generator unit), MGU-K (kinetic motor-generator unit), battery and electronic components— all exceeding the limits permitted under Article 28.2 of the Sporting Regulations.

The changes were made under Parc Fermé (closed-car conditions) without prior authorization, which automatically triggers a pit-lane start. Esteban Ocon (Haas) faces the same penalty for similar unauthorized modifications.

For Verstappen, the setback is two-fold: he loses his grid position and exposes a growing concern Red Bull has struggled to contain —the reliability of the RB21. Throughout the second half of the season, the team has introduced repeated engine changes, revealing wear and efficiency issues within the hybrid system just as McLaren and Ferrari have stabilized their technical packages.

And the timing couldn’t be worse. Interlagos is demanding, features limited overtaking windows, and is prone to unpredictable weather. With Lando Norris starting from pole and extending his championship lead, Verstappen will need a flawless comeback to stay in contention.

Verstappen has dominated in recent years, but Brazil 2025 might become a turning point. When reliability fades, championships slip away. Red Bull knows it well: the fight isn’t only against McLaren—it’s against time… and against their own machinery.
