Lando Norris stands on the brink of his first Formula 1 World Championship. The McLaren driver could wrap up the 2025 title this Sunday at the Qatar Grand Prix, provided he manages the race with precision against rivals Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen.

After finishing third in Saturday’s Sprint, Norris heads into the main race with 396 points. Sprint winner Piastri sits on 374, while reigning champion Verstappen (Red Bull) follows with 371.

The title math, for once, is refreshingly simple.

The core scenario:
  • If Norris is outscored by either driver on Sunday, the championship will roll into Abu Dhabi.
  • To clinch the title tomorrow, Norris must:
    1. Maintain his points advantage over Verstappen, because if they enter Abu Dhabi separated by 25 points, Norris becomes unreachable thanks to tie-breakers (more wins and more second places).
    2. Extend his advantage over Piastri from 22 to 26 points, since both are currently tied on race wins — meaning Piastri would take the tie-break if he won in Abu Dhabi.
So what does this mean on track?

If Piastri finishes inside the top 9, Norris needs:

  • To finish at least two places ahead,
  • or one place ahead if Piastri finishes second.

It’s a game of margins, consistency and control. The opportunity is real, but not yet secure.

In the unlikely scenario that none of the three scores points, only Piastri would remain mathematically capable of challenging Norris in Abu Dhabi.

The Brit has the upper hand. Now he just needs to close it out.
