Oscar Piastri is back in the spotlight. After nearly three months of struggles and fading momentum, the McLaren driver delivered a Qatar Sprint pole position that instantly reignites his championship ambitions and his confidence.
Once seen as the clear favorite for the 2025 F1 World Championship, Piastri saw his 34-point advantage over Lando Norris collapse into a 24-point deficit, with Max Verstappen (Red Bull) drawing level after McLaren’s double disqualification in Las Vegas.
But Friday in Qatar felt different.
Piastri felt different.
On his decisive SQ3 lap, the Australian survived a wild snap at Turn 4, keeping the car alive with ice-cold reflexes and the aggression that once made him the title favorite.
Then came the radio moment everyone is talking about. When race engineer Tom Stallard told him he was on pole, Piastri erupted:
“Ah, fk yeah!”**
Followed by the line that defined the day:
“Nice to be back.”
A message, a relief, and a warning — all in four words.
Stallard added: “Nice job, Oscar. That’s P1.”
Piastri closed with: “Nice! Nicely done. Thanks everybody.”
He’ll start alongside George Russell (Mercedes), while Norris will have to fight from third. A crucial detail: Norris can technically clinch the World Championship this weekend by finishing ahead of Piastri and Verstappen.
Speaking in parc fermé, Piastri explained: “It’s been a good day, which is nice for a change. Everything clicked from the start. Big moment on my lap, but we held onto it. The car has been great all weekend.”
McLaren looks strong.
Piastri looks alive again.
And the title fight? Qatar might be the spark that brings it right back.
