A tense, strategic and FIA-laden showdown crowned a new Formula 1 World Champion, as Max Verstappen won the race but Norris claimed the ultimate prize.
The 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix delivered everything it promised: intensity, strategy, controversy and a brand-new World Champion. Lando Norris, driving with precision, maturity and emotional composure, sealed his first title after resisting consistent pressure from Charles Leclerc, a strategic duel with Oscar Piastri and an FIA investigation over his clash with Yuki Tsunoda. By securing third place, he officially joined the elite group of Formula 1 World Champions.
The grid looked engineered for fireworks. Max Verstappen started from pole, Norris alongside him as the championship leader, and Piastri in third — a perfect setup for a dramatic fight —. Verstappen and Norris opted for medium tires, while Piastri launched on hards, setting the stage for a long-game strategy that defined the race.
The start didn’t change the top order, but it shaped the tone. Verstappen shut the door on any Norris attempt, and before completing the opening lap, Piastri executed a stunning outside overtake at Turn 9 to grab second. “I wasn’t surprised,” McLaren CEO Zak Brown remarked, implying he expected Piastri to push aggressively in his final chance at the title.
Behind them, Norris came under pressure as Leclerc led the last DRS train (the Drag Reduction System that will disappear in 2026 under the new regulations). George Russell joined the chase while Lewis Hamilton climbed from P16 on softs.
By Lap 16, the first wave of pit stops reshaped the order. Norris rejoined in heavy traffic behind Kimi Antonelli and had to deliver critical overtakes at Turn 6 and the second back straight, moves essential to covering Leclerc and preventing Russell’s undercut from succeeding.
Then came the most controversial moment: the fight with Yuki Tsunoda. Red Bull instructed Tsunoda to defend aggressively and he replied: “I know what to do, leave it to me.” The battle pushed Norris off track and prompted a dual FIA investigation. Tsunoda received a five-second penalty for weaving, while Norris escaped without punishment — a pivotal moment in the championship narrative.
The race entered its final strategic phase when Leclerc committed to a two-stop on Lap 40. McLaren reacted instantly, bringing Norris in for hards on Lap 41 and maintaining the gap. Verstappen, meanwhile, regained the lead after passing Piastri and cruised toward his eighth win of the season.
The final laps were all about composure. Norris needed third to clinch the title. Fourth would leave him vulnerable to Leclerc’s late-race charge on mediums. But Norris held firm. His tire management, pace control and calm under pressure defined the closing moments of his championship-winning drive.
Verstappen took the checkered flag. Piastri finished second. And Lando Norris, with P3, became World Champion for the very first time.
Thus ended one of the most intense seasons of recent years and symbolically, the end of an era: in 2026, Formula 1 will introduce radically redesigned chassis and power units. But 2025 belongs to Norris, the driver who grew in front of the paddock’s eyes and finally became king.
