Lando Norris didn’t just leave Abu Dhabi as the 2025 Formula 1 World Champion. He did so with perspective, humility, and a clear vision of what lies ahead. After edging out McLaren team mate Oscar Piastri in a season-long internal showdown, Norris was unequivocal about the future: Piastri will become a world champion.

Third place at Yas Marina was enough for Norris to secure the title, making him only the 35th driver in Formula 1 history to win the Drivers’ Championship, beating Max Verstappen by just two points. Yet the defining storyline of the season lived within the papaya garage. Piastri finished third overall, just 13 points behind Norris, despite leading the standings for much of the year and matching Norris with seven victories apiece.

At one stage, the Australian held a commanding 34-point lead following Norris’ retirement at the Dutch Grand Prix, seemingly placing his maiden title within reach. However, a run of six Grands Prix without a podium during the closing phase of the season proved decisive. “It wasn’t quite the ending I hoped for,” Piastri admitted after the finale.

In the midst of celebrating his own career-defining achievement, Norris was quick to credit both his rivals and his team mate. “I had two guys who were incredibly fast and made my life very tough this year,” he said. “From round one, I knew Oscar was probably going to be the hardest guy to beat.” He also acknowledged Verstappen’s ever-present threat. “You can never rule Max out. He’s Max.”

But it was Norris’ assessment of Piastri that resonated most. “Oscar will be a world champion,” he stated confidently. “Sharing the track and fighting champions like Max, and someone like Oscar, is what made this season so special.”

As McLaren closes a season that transformed them from contenders into champions, Norris’ title feels less like a conclusion and more like the opening chapter of a new era. The 2025 battle crowned one champion, but it also delivered a promise: Piastri’s time is coming.
