Oscar Piastri and the season that made him stronger

It wasn’t the ending he wanted, but it was the year that shaped a future world champion.

Oscar Piastri may have missed out on the 2025 Formula 1 title, but he ended the season with something just as important: a deeper understanding of himself as a driver and as a competitor. After a tense championship fight within McLaren and a dramatic finale that went in favor of teammate Lando Norris, the Australian chose reflection over regret.

For much of the season, Piastri led the World Championship. At one stage, he held a 34-point advantage over Norris, claimed seven race victories — the same number as the eventual champion — and played a crucial role in McLaren’s second consecutive Constructors’ Championship. But a difficult run in the latter part of the year saw him slip to third overall, finishing 13 points short of the title.

Speaking after the Abu Dhabi finale, Piastri was candid:
“Obviously, I would have wished for a slightly different ending, but this year I’ve learned a hell of a lot about myself as a race car driver and as a person.”

He admitted that if someone had offered him the final tally of pole positions, wins, and podiums at the start of the year, he would have taken it without hesitation. Yet it was the challenging moments that proved most valuable:
“Even in the tough moments, I’ve learned a lot about how I can be stronger in the future.”

The season unfolded in sharp contrasts. After taking his first career win at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, Piastri entered 2025 as a genuine title contender, scoring six victories before the summer break as McLaren emerged as the team to beat. Then came the downturn: six races without a podium, a rare crash in Azerbaijan, and a disqualification in Las Vegas — shared with Norris — that allowed both Norris and Max Verstappen to leapfrog him in the standings.

Still, the closing rounds offered encouragement. A near-perfect weekend in Qatar and a second-place finish in Abu Dhabi helped him refocus on the bigger picture.
“When I look at this season compared to my first two years in F1, this year has been head and shoulders above,” he said. “Even though the end result isn’t quite what I wanted, there’s a lot of strength I’ve gained from proving to myself what I can achieve.”

Piastri emphasized that many of those lessons go beyond pure results:
“There are lessons about how I drive the car in different conditions, but also lessons outside the car — dealing with adversity and difficult moments.”

With just three seasons in Formula 1 under his belt, the Australian sees 2025 not as a missed opportunity, but as a foundation:
“It’s only my third attempt at this in F1. Hopefully I’ve got plenty more to go, but the lessons from this year will only make me stronger.”

Oscar Piastri didn’t leave 2025 as world champion. But he left it as something just as dangerous for his rivals: a driver who now knows exactly what it takes to win.
