Ferrari’s president broke his silence with a sharp message to his drivers after the double DNF in Brazil: “We need drivers who think about Ferrari, not themselves.”
Interlagos, Brazil — Chaos once again swept through Maranello. After a disastrous weekend at the São Paulo Grand Prix, where both Ferraris failed to finish, president John Elkann stepped in publicly with an uncharacteristically firm tone:
“It’s important for our drivers to focus on driving and speak less.”
Speaking at an event in Milan, Elkann made clear his frustration with a season that had promised much more. He also stressed that Ferrari still has something to fight for: “There are still important races left, and finishing second in the Constructors’ Championship is not impossible.”
Tension inside the garage escalated following Lewis Hamilton’s stinging remarks after the race. The seven-time world champion described his first season with Ferrari as “a nightmare”, after retiring on lap 40 while dealing with a damaged car and penalties that shut down any chance of scoring points.
Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, didn’t even get the opportunity to defend himself. His race ended on lap six after being caught in a collision through no fault of his own.
Elkann’s intervention wasn’t just a reprimand — it was a warning.
“We need drivers who don’t think about themselves, but about Ferrari,” he said firmly.
He also pointed to the brand’s recent WEC triumph as proof of what unity can accomplish:
“When Ferrari acts as a team, it wins.”
With pressure mounting and morale shaken, Ferrari heads to Las Vegas in a vulnerable state. The fight for second in the championship is still alive, but the atmosphere within Maranello feels more fragile than ever.
